Make over shows...

I watch 10 Years Younger on TLC every once in a while.

They do a great job of revamping someone's look but they also go above and beyond what most people can afford by having them visit a plastic surgeon and having cosmetic dentistry.

Do you think they go too far? Would you rather see them use means the average person can afford or do you think the make overs are realistic?

I haven't seen the show, but from the way you describe it I think they may go a bit far for my tastes.

I realize many people will want to better their appearance with plastic surgery or cosmetic dentistry, but in many cases I think too much emphasis is placed on the appearance of a person.

I haven't seen that particular show either, but the ones I have seen seem to disrespect the person being made over, talking quite rudely about the person right when she's sitting there.
I don't know if this strictly qualifies as a makeover show, but I watched "You Are What You Eat" on BBCAmerica this morning, and I thought the MC was dead rude to the subject. A representation of all the food this woman ate in a week was on a table, and the MC was raking through the candy and putting her down. This poor woman had to discuss the state of her "poo", as well.

I've seen this show and I always come away thinking the same thing... like what inspiration is it to someone who can't have the dentistry and cosmetic stuff done? I think I'd rather see them help "regular" people and not just pick out those who need the mouthwork and plastic surgery done.

Do you watch "What Not to Wear" too? I like that sometimes. They sure don't hold back their their thoughts and feelings, though, do they?

My wife watches What Not to Wear. I'd like to know who told those two that they had style. I don't especially care for how they treat people.

I've noticed that, Frankie. It always annoys me to see them cutting down something that the person had been wearing. I have some clothing that they'd crucify, but I wouldn't want it to be in front of the world! Granted some of the stuff they toss out is too horrid to defend.

And what's with Stacey's hair? Sheesh, either color it or let it go gray, somewhere in the middle just makes me cringe!

When disregarding someone's feelings becomes a form of entertainment, on a regular basis, something is terribly wrong!

Yes... but I haven't really noticed that it's a new thing. I think it's been going steadily downhill since... when? Maybe the mid 80s? Early 90s? Wonder what the changing factor was?

I saw a clip of the Scottish lady, Susan (I can't remember her last name) who has a lovely voice but is not what a person might call "good looking". My first question was which makeover show was going to get her (and the ratings)?
Something else I was wondering about, pertaining to our thread of belittling shows: whoever found and auditioned this lady could tell she had a beautiful voice, so when the judging panel were so "amazed" and "moved" by her singing, that was a total set-up, right? Maybe these nasty shows are understanding they are turning people off, and they will get less awful? Whatever sells the commercials, I guess?

I'm not sure they'd get less awful if they upset people... controversy sells and that's very unfortunate. You're right about the commercials and that's probably tied into controversy as well.
